Gianmarco VERUGGIO received the degree in electronic engineering from Genoa University, Italy, in 1980. He is Senior Research Scientist at IEIIT of Italian National Research Council. In 1989 he founded the CNR-IAN Robotlab, which he headed until 2003. His research interest focuses on Experimental Robotics in Extreme Environment, and he led several underwater robotics campaigns in Antarctica and in the Arctic. In 2000 he founded the association “School of Robotics” to promote this new science among young people and the society at large. In 2002 he coined the word, and proposed the concept of Roboethics, to which he is dedicating increasing resources.
He is serving the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society as Corresponding Co-chair of the Technical Committee on Roboethics, as Co-Chair of the Human Rights and Ethics Committee, as a Distinguished Lecturer and as RAS representative in the IEEE Humanitarian Technology Challenge.
